Hairspray opens August 5, 2011 at the Chanhassen Dinner Theatre.

Edited 12/08/11:  From the Chanhassen Dinner Theatres website:

“We are thrilled to announce that we are extending our current Main Stage production of Hairspray. Originally slated to close on January 28th, Hairspray will now play through May 26th, 2012.”

The opening night of a new production at Chanhassen Dinner Theatres is always an exciting event, and August 5, 2011 will be no exception.  Hairspray is set to open on that date,  and will be playing at the dinner theatre until January 28, 2012.

About Hairspray, from the Chanhassen Dinner Theatre website

“It’s 1962, and pleasantly plump Baltimore teen Tracy Turnblad has only one desire – to dance on the popular “Corny Collins Show.” When her dream comes true, Tracy is transformed from social outcast to sudden star, but she must use her newfound power and the help of a crazy cast of characters to dethrone the reigning Teen Queen, win the affections of heartthrob Link Larkin, and integrate a TV network, all without denting her ‘do’!

“This production features hits such as “Mama, I’m a Big Girl Now,” “You Can’t Stop the Beat,” and “Good Morning Baltimore.” Don’t miss Hairspray, Broadway’s musical-comedy phenomenon that inspired a major motion picture and won eight 2003 Tony Awards, including Best Musical.”

Production credits:  Book by Mark O’Donnell and Thomas Meehan; music by Marc Shaiman; lyrics by Scott Wittman and Marc Shaiman, and directed by Michael Brindisi.

Content Statement from the website

“Broadway’s beloved mega-hit is a light-hearted musical comedy phenomenon and winner of eight Tony Awards, including Best Musical. The story takes place in 1962 and deals with issues of racial injustice in American history. The audience embraces these moments and the happy ending is enriched by dealing with the subject in a positive light.  Hairspray will appeal to audiences of all ages.  It contains a small amount of mild, mature language and situations. For specific details please contact our box office.”
