Ard_Godfrey_house lge web

The historic Ard Godfrey house, located in Chute Square, is the oldest surviving frame home in the Twin Cities. Built in 1849, the Greek Revival house was the residence for the Ard Godfrey family. Located in the St. Anthony Falls historic Milling District, the house has been impeccably restored and is filled with furnishings and household items authentic to the period 1849 to 1853. While the Park Board owns the house, the renovation and operation of the house has been a volunteer project of The Woman’s Club of Minneapolis since 1976.  (Source:  Minneapolis Park and Recreation)

There may be fewer scheduled events in Minneapolis parks at this time of the year, but outdoor fun doesn’t grind to a complete halt. Twin Cities families just take colder weather in stride by bundling up and joining in the winter fun and fellowship in beautifully landscaped surroundings.

Some exciting Minneapolis parks’ holiday events and activities are on the way with the earliest scheduled for December 1, 2012.

Information about events and activities at Minneapolis parks can be found at www.minneapolisparks.org, and also by clicking here. The event calendar is updated throughout the month, so check back occasionally to see if anything new has been added.

Events take place in other states as well. This hardy plunger was climbing out of Lake Michigan during the Polar Bear Plunge on New Year’s Day 2009 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.

Brr!  When you register for one of these annual events, you literally plan to go jump in the lake – a very, very cold lake!  Yes, the Polar Bear Plunge events will soon be taking place, and all for a great cause.

The Polar Bear Plunge is presented by Minnesota law enforcement as part of the year-round Law Enforcement Torch Run® events. They invite everyone to join them in support of Special Olympics athletes by jumping into frigid Minnesota waters!

The 2013 Polar Bear Plunge Kick-Off will take place on January 25, 2013 at Jimmy’s Food & Drink in Vadnais Heights.  Click here to learn more. The first plunge takes place at White Bear Lake on January 26.

Over 14,000 participants raised over $2.85 million in 2012 for Special Olympics Minnesota, setting new records for both participation and the amount of monies raised.

The original letter sent to the New York Sun in 1897 by Virginia O’Hanlon. (Verified by PBS’ Antiques Roadshow as genuine).

One of the most popular Christmas traditions in the Twin Cities area is a family visit to the 8th Floor Auditorium at the Macy’s downtown Minneapolis store.  This year’s dates for the free Macy’s Santaland are November 17 – December 24, 2012.

Macy’s has several additional Christmas activities on its 2012 schedule.  Do you remember the “Yes, Virginia, there is a Santa Claus” letter that was published in the New York Sun in 1897? (See image of the original letter above, and click this link for the response from the editor). Macy’s is reviving that memory for this year’s Santaland celebration.  Also, Macy’s is sponsoring a fundraising activity for the Make-A-Wish Foundation.
