Rhubarb and asparagus are the early season crops most widely available.

Are you getting antsy for more signs of spring?  It may seem early in the season, but farmers markets are beginning to open all across the Metro area with spring crops and other products available for shoppers.  And that is very welcome news for all those who eagerly shop these venues throughout the growing season.

Available seasonal produce will be on display at the Maple Grove indoor farmers market.

The Maple Grove Farmers Market is inviting everyone to spruce up the harvest season and the holidays with a visit to their indoor market inside the Maple Grove Community Center.  The market will be open the following Thursdays:  November 3 & 17 and December 1 & 15, 2011.

There will be a wide variety of vendors filling the back lobby area with lots of specialty products on display for gift giving and holiday entertaining.  Plans are underway for chef demos, music, cookbook exchange, giveaways and more.

Thanks, vendors, for all of your hard work that makes the farmers markets a reality and a pleasure for consumers to visit.

The various food items on display yesterday at the Farmers Market in Maple Grove were downright impressive!  There was such an abundance of fresh and colorful vegetables and other products that I could have enjoyed shopping there for several hours.  As always, the Market was bustling with customers who were lined up in front of each vendor’s stall eagerly waiting their turn to make purchases.

This is the time of year when the produce is at its absolute peak.  The color, size and freshness of the late summer crops are everything that one desires when purchasing homegrown veggies.  There were also apples for sale that I meant to buy but I simply forgot to go back and do that before leaving for my home.

What a perfect time of the season to celebrate National Farmers Market Week – our many farmers markets throughout the Twin Cities area are now displaying the peak of the harvest and literally overflowing with colorful, healthful produce and other unique products.

The official proclamation making August 7 – 13, 2011 National Farmers Market Week was made by Thomas J. Vilsack, the U.S. Secretary of Agriculture, on July 20th.  Twin Cities vendors are ready, willing, able and eager to please their customers with their freshest and finest produce – if you haven’t checked out a farmers market near you, now is the perfect time to pay one (or more) a visit.

Raspberries will soon be showing up at local farmers markets.

The majority of the farmers markets in the Twin Cities are open and enjoying good sales along with an increased variety of produce to sell – several markets that have not as yet opened will be starting their season in early July.  If the farmers market near you is regularly open on Mondays, be sure to check their website to see if they will be closed on Monday, July 4th.

Strawberry season has arrived in the Twin Cities area – U pick strawberry farms are counting on having a good harvest of berries.  According to news on the Minnesota Grown website, the cool spring caused strawberry season to be delayed a bit this year, but the crop is excellent!

A typical falafel sandwich - not a Foxy Falafel! Foxy Falafel puts a different spin on this Middle Eastern favorite with a unique preparation method and tantalizing sauces.

Falafel isn’t a word that usually comes up in casual chitchat.  It might, however, if you’ve been to a farmers market where you have purchased a Foxy Falafel and you want to tell someone about your new discovery.
