A bit of satire on internet culture!

My “twitter bird” has flown the coop. Now I wish that I had joined Twitter years ago!

My personal Twitter bird has officially flown the coop and is now happily fluttering around the world wide web visiting other sites that can be accessed through Twitter. I’m learning a lot by doing so and gaining proficiency in using this social medium. In fact, I’ve completed almost 900 tweets or retweets since I activated an account on July 8th, and I’ve gained 128 followers (many thanks to all of them!).

I’ve selected my own sites to follow on Twitter (290 as of this date) based on my personal interests that include news, politics, health, science, management, cooking, and recreational walking.

In order to share my tweets/retweets with my readers, I have added “Twitter Updates” on my sidebar.  These messages will change frequently as I like to retweet as much as possible.  I’m following a number of Twin Cities’ news sources and local businesses, and will retweet their messages as seems appropriate.

1stMNstatecapitol-1860

A photograph of Minnesota’s first State Capitol, circa 1860. The Capitol was built in 1854, and was destroyed by fire in 1881.

Primary elections are very important – especially since turnout during the primaries is usually low which gives each primary vote significant impact compared to a vote in the general election.

In Minnesota, the primary election date is Tuesday, August 14, 2012.  Polling places have changed for many voters, so make sure where you vote before heading out to the polls.

Where there are contests on the ballot, it is especially important to research candidates.  And don’t forget to research the candidates for judges as these elected officials have significant impact on the lives of citizens.

Not all is hustle and bustle in the Twin Cities – this lovely view is of the Mississippi River between St. Paul and Minneapolis.

Quite some time ago my sister and her husband made their first visit to the home where I previously lived before moving to my townhome.  To my way of thinking that home was located in a peaceful suburb of St. Paul and in a neighborhood quite similar to those that existed in the small towns that we used to call home.

My family members, small town dwellers all of their lives, thought differently.  “How can you live here?” was the question my sister posed.  “As we got close to your home there were sirens blaring, and police cars, and so much traffic – why would you choose to live in a city?”

Why would I choose to live in a city?  Let me count the ways… Continue Reading…

A prix fixe menu from 1893. Times have really changed!

Father’s Day is Sunday, June 17, 2012.  Father’s Day is a great time to celebrate by dining out – it has the dual purpose of honoring Dad while giving the rest of the family a day off from food preparation.  And Dads won’t mind exchanging grill duty that Sunday for steak dinner prix fixes or bottomless beer!

Even on such a popular holiday as Father’s Day there are specials to be had, and menus and buffets that are designed to give Dads an extra special dining experience.  How to find these specials?  The OpenTable website is one source of information.

Hey! I'm pinning - how about you?

It has been almost eight weeks since I was officially welcomed into the Pinterest fold – just enough time to become a tad bit addicted to this new way of networking and organizing.  I now have 31 boards with over 1,000 pins that link to a wide array of websites.

Popular topics on many Pinterest sites that I’ve visited are about food, photography and fashion.  But anything goes, including vintage, movies, books, decorating, cars, parties, gardening, weddings, and DIY, etc.

Rhubarb and asparagus are the early season crops most widely available.

Are you getting antsy for more signs of spring?  It may seem early in the season, but farmers markets are beginning to open all across the Metro area with spring crops and other products available for shoppers.  And that is very welcome news for all those who eagerly shop these venues throughout the growing season.

There are three main sources of information that keep Twin Cities’ residents on top of the “what and where” of farmers market happenings.  For updates throughout the season, just do a bit of surfing on any of these three websites to keep abreast of the latest news:

Pinterest provides an easier way to keep items pinned and organized!

I’m an avid internet surfer, both for my own personal interest and for gathering information necessary for publishing articles on my website, R.C.’s Twin Cities Beat.

As I was researching on the internet over the course of  the last few months, a very distinctive letter “P” or the full word “Pinterest” kept popping up somewhere on so many sites that I visited. My curiosity finally won out, and I went to the Pinterest.com site to see what it was all about.  Bingo – it was about something that I’m always seeking, which is better organization, along with some communication aspects that can come into play to whatever degree you like.

Northern Pacific Railway postcard for Mother's Day 1916.

Mother’s Day is Sunday, May 13, 2012.  Moms enjoy receiving flowers, candy, gift items, and yes, they probably won’t turn down an invitation to dine out while not cooking one thing or washing one dish.

Stretching those budget dollars just a little bit further as you treat mom on Mother’s Day at a restaurant of your choice will make both you and mom happy.  Also, getting a holiday reservation nailed down for the time and place of your choice is a great stress reliever – tables can be hard to come by at certain times of the day without one.

Välkommen to a museum that holds a unique place in Minnesota history!  Gammelgården Museum is extending a very special welcome to visitors to attend its 40th birthday party which will be held on Saturday, April 14, 2012.

Located just north of the Twin Cities in Scandia, Minnesota, Gammelgården Museum has untaken a mission to “preserve, present and promote Swedish immigrant heritage.” It tells the story of how the Swedes settled in Minnesota in the mid-1800s and preserves many artifacts from that era.
