Cold weather is definitely here, even though the snow cover across Minnesota is pretty sparse!  Neither weather condition will keep Twin Cities’ residents and guests from enjoying a host of activities when the St. Paul Winter Carnival takes place from January 24 to February 3, 2013.

St. Paul will be buzzing with all kinds of sporting, recreational and family-fun activities when Vulcanus Rex and his Krewe do battle with Boreas during the annual Winter Carnival.

Kicking off the fun will be the first of the three Winter Carnival parades.  The Moon Glow Pedestrian Parade is scheduled for Thursday, January 24, 2013 from 5:30 to 8:00 PM.  The parade route is from the Securian Building at 401 Robert Street to Rice Park.  Everyone is invited to march in this official kick-off event.

To mark the 60th anniversary of the Pioneer Press Treasure Hunt, this medallion will be retired and given away in an online drawing at the end of this year's hunt.

The medallion has been found, and to the victor(s) belong the spoils!  Tony Schmidt Park in Arden Hills yielded up the coveted puck this morning (2/01/12).

The Pioneer Press has announced the following:  The medallion was found after the 11th clue by Lange Wallgren of Osseo. Four hunting partners — Jake Ingebrigtson of St. Paul, Corey Hargreaves of New Brighton, Alex Valen of North Oaks and Nate Buck of Cottage Grove — join him as winners.

To mark the 60th anniversary of the Pioneer Press Treasure Hunt, this medallion will be retired and given away in an online drawing at the end of this year's hunt.

Always generating great excitement in the Twin Cities area, the Pioneer Press is once again sponsoring a Medallion Treasure Hunt that will run from January 22, 2012 to February 2, 2012 (*ending earlier if the medallion is found before February 2nd).  Once the medallion is found, game over – the prize will be collected and the celebration by the winner(s) begins!

The hunt, started in 1952 in conjunction with the St. Paul Winter Carnival, challenges the newspaper’s readers to decipher a series of up to 12 clues in hopes of locating a plastic puck somewhere on public land in Ramsey County. This year’s successful sleuthers could win up to $10,000.

Not just one Winter Carnival parade, but two – both with exciting entries and the theme of “Sounds Like Fun.”  Plan now to stake out a spot for viewing as crowds will be lining the parade routes and choice spots will fill up quickly.

There won't be many of these around the Twin Cities anytime soon!

Minnesota has been experiencing unseasonably warm weather over the past month which makes it feel more like March than January.   As I write this, there are light snow flurries here in the Twin Cities, but with no snow accumulations in the 10-day forecast it won’t seem the same for those attending the many Winter Carnival outdoor events that will be taking place.

The Winter Carnival is scheduled to begin in about two weeks, running from January 26 through February 5, 2012.

For the first time since 1994 sled dog races have been planned for White Bear Lake, taking place on January 28-29.  Some snow would be nice for that event!
